 Women tend to be sedentary during the winter months in the Southern United States.

Here are some activities women can do in the winter to keep their calorie burn equal to summer.

Saturdays

  • Cleaning the House.  The house may not be messy or need a clean but clean anyways.  You will burn at least 100 calories per hour standing and cleaning.  So, on the weekends, set aside the morning or afternoon for cleaning.  Set the timer for six hours.  You don't have to be cleaning for the whole six hours, just standing and wandering around.  
  • Grocery Shopping.  Pick three grocery stores (If you own a car).  Designate what you purchase at each grocery store.  Spend 30 minutes to an hour at each grocery store not including drive time between grocery stores.  When you return home, put away the groceries for 60 minutes and then make a meal.  Between the grocery shopping and the sorting of groceries and the meal prep, you will have burned between 400 and 500 calories.
  • Car maintenance -  Take the car to a station that has a self car wash.  Wash the car (15 minutes to 30 minutes) Then clean out the whole car including the trunk which will take 30 minutes. Vacuum the car and detail the car wiping the inside windows, the vinyl and the textiles.  Take a box with you and put everything that does not belong in the car into the box.  When you go home take the box into the house with you and put all those things back where they belong.   This may take a few hours.
  • Taking a Walk. Map a walk that lasts 45 minutes.  If you are used to chatting while walking,  ask friends if they want to take a walk with you for your wellness detox.   Schedule a walk three times a day for optimal detox benefits.
  • Joining a Gym.  Spend at least one hour at the gym.

Sunday

  • Taking a walk.  Map out three walks you can take three times a day. outdoors with a group.  Tell  your family they will take the walk with you on Sundays.   Look for interesting places for your family to go for a walk.  Plan for the walk to take three hours.  Pack a breakfast / lunch / dinner.
  • Go to the Gym.  Spend an hour standing at the gym doing free weights, weight machines or working on one of the machines.  Do not worry about how many machines you use.  Spend at least an hour at the gym using the machines.  The minimum calorie burn at the gym will be 200 calories if you are using machines.  Just standing at the gym will burn 100 calories.
  • Invite friends over for lunch.  Cook and clean up lunch with friends. From experience, you will be busy cooking and talking and then cleaning and talking.  When clean up is done, don't sit down.  Explain to your friends you are on a wellness detox and need to keep standing.   If they stay at your house from noon until six, you will have burned 600 calories.
